UNSAFE HEADSTONES AT LONDON RD. CEMETERY - NEWS RELEASE
NEWS RELEASE
3rd February 2012
LONDON ROAD CEMETERY – GODMANCHESTER
Health and Safety issues have been highlighted at the London Road Cemetery in Godmanchester and a number of the Memorial Headstones may be unsafe.
The Town Council has made arrangements to test the safety of all memorials in the London Road Cemetery during the first two weeks of March. Letters will be sent to owners of memorials where details are available to advise of this work. If work is required to make them safe the owners will be contacted after the inspection has taken place.
The Town Clerk said
“I know this may be very distressing for the relatives and visitors to the
Cemetery. I would stress that the Town
Council has no intention of having stakes inserted behind defective memorials, and
will only consider laying memorials flat as a last resort. Furthermore, the Town Council will work
closely with the memorial owners to ensure that all remedial work will be
carried out quickly and with as little upset as possible.”
