LANCASTER SALUTES GODMANCHESTER - SATURDAY, 12 JULY 2014

What a fantastic sight - the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Lancaster diverted to fly over Godmanchester on Saturday to commemorate Sqn Ldr Matthew Drummond Wilson and the crew of the 'Godmanchester Stirling' which crashed on 11 April 1942 in Cow Lane.

Families of the crew from all over UK had gathered to remember the crew at an event organised by Roger Leivers who, after the fly-past, read a moving poem by a 21-year-old serviceman who died soon after.  It was wonderful to see so many of Godmanchester's community come along to applaud.

It had been hoped that a Spitfire and Hurricane would accompany the Lanc, but that was not to be . . however, that didn't matter - there was many a tearful eye as the roar of 4 Merlin engines flew over the Causeway.

Details of the Stirling incident can be found at the Porch Museum website below.  The pictures below show the Lancaster, Roger addressing the crowd and the beautiful car that features in the story - see the website.
